Once upon a time there was a rather long "shaggy dog" story circulating about a small hotel in England and some prospective American guests who inquired as to whether the 'W.C.' was located conveniently close to their rooms.
Here's the gist of the jest:
Assuming they were quite religious and that 'W.C.' meant 'Wayside Chapel', the owner responded enthusiastically, "Yes, it's only a quarter-mile down the road, and is open every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. It accomodates just a dozen or so at one time, but the acoustics are excellent and the smallest sound can be clearly heard throughout ... "
