I knew it. As soon as I open my mouth, I have to go to look up some facts. <img class=" />
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad - The Historic Preservation Study by Wilson and Glover, 1980 was available thru the Friends at (505) 880-1311 or at Trackside Emporiun at (800) 756-1848. I don't see it listed anymore on either of their book lists.
According to A Century + Ten of D&RGW Narrow Gauge Freight Cars, 1871 to 1981 by Sloan, 2000 (also available at these aformentioned locations), Class 20 (Nos. 6200-6209) were built in 1918 and rebuilt in 1937. He says that they "were rebuilt with cut down standard gauge bolsters and draft sills and were reinforced with 8" by 6" angle irons on the outside of the side sills and inside of the center sills." Since I helped tear apart and reassemble 6200, I would beg to differ. The center sill is steel that is welded to the boltsers. It was "reinforced" with wood. It is very hard to see the steel center sill unless you look up from under the midddle of the car and check the attacment of the bolsters. I would strongly believe that rider gon 301 and 6209 in Golden are the same.
As far as the Class 22 (Nos. 6300-6314) Sloan says that they were the last cars built as wood flat cars. They were built in 1926 and reinforced with steel in 1937. It indicates that they only have wood center sills. They look so much like Class 20 and 21 that I thought they were all alike. I didn't have the references that I do now when I edited the equipment list.
Also the Class 22's originally had 4'8" wheelbase archbar trucks with 26" Cast Iron Wheels. Only 6302 and 6314 still exist. 6303 was still around after 1963.
