Your example of the Great Western is certainly a good one. There is no question that the type/quality of the coal used dictated a lot toward the front end design and the necessity of extending the smoke box to fit all the stuff needed to obtain good draft and contain ash. Northern Pacific, with their "Rosebud " coal was another one.
