Dave:
Wouldn't attempt it until the county does their annual work on the road...usually sometime in June. I would check with Gunnison country before attempting it.
My wife and I went up there one year in May (in a 4x4) and found a tree across the road. Fortunately it was a small aspen and we were able to drive over it (too big to move). I would recommend coming up from Gunnison as you will be going upgrade. If you come over from Crested Butte, you will be going downgrade...in case you need to backup. If you can wait until the fall, it is a beautiful road for aspen. Kebler Pass has the largest aspen grove in the world. In fact, they say it is the largest living thing on the planet as aspens are linked to each other.
