I blundered into this on the Colorado newspaper site
Telluride Journal June 4,1908
MOTOR CAR FOR THE SILVERTON NORTHERN
Many residents of Salida were admirers of the hansome car which came in on a broad gauge freight car, from the manufacturer in Freeport, Ill. Last Wed and was unloaded here to be run over the narrow gauge system to be used on the Silverton Northern road of which Ottto Mears is president.
The car operates with gasoline power, caries twelve passengers and is one of the most complete of the kind ever seen in the west. Two or more officers of the Silverton Northern road were here with the car and expected to begin their long journey over the mountains---Salida Mail

Telluride Journal June 5,1908
ONLY TWELVE MILES AN HOUR
Railroad Automobile Run By Gasoline Power is Being Tried Out on the Mears Roads at Silverton—Carries Twelve People
The Journal of Thursday mentioned the unloading at Salida of a gasoline railroad automobile. Intended for use on the Mears railroads out of Silverton. The Silverton and Northern running up the Animas river from Silverton and the Silverton and Red Mountain road.
The Machine reached Silverton a day or two ago, covering the 227 miles from Salida to Silverton in twenty hours actual running time, or a fraction less than twelve miles an hour.
The vehicle is intended for passenger traffic and is arranged to carry twelve persons. It is now in service and is being tried out by an expert over the roads on which it is calculated to run.
The Contrivance is something new in mountain railroading and naturally a considerable interest centers in its operations.
It is claimed for the railroad gasoline automobile that it will make better than average speed and can be operated at a considerable saving over the cost of running steam passenger trains over steep mountain grades
If it proves a success on the Silverton roads others are likely to be introduced on the narrow gauge systems of the Rio Grande in the San Juan.

Silverton Standard June 6th, 1908
NEW R.R. AUTO FOR S.N.
Last Monday evening Vice President J.R. Pitcher, accompanied by J.P. Stover, Supt. of the Stover Company of Freeport, Ill., arrived in a brand new railroad automobile which is to be put in use for passenger service on the Silverton Northern.
The machine is a Stover, made in Freeport, Ill. It is 30 horsepower 4 cyclinder machine of the friction drive type with a water cooled motor. Ten or twelve passengers can be seated comfortable in the car and in case of emergency more can be crowed in.
