I am fully aware that it costs more to overhaul a steam locomotive than a dismal.
I am also aware that operating costs are lower for a dismal than a steam locomotive.
But out of curiousity, if the average rebuild of a K-36 or similar locomotive seems to run around 800K to 1M or better, what is the price of a complete and total overhaul of a diesel locomotive, like the recently completed overhaul of Porter 1203 at the Sumpter Valley or the 19 at the C&TS?
Or probably an even better indicator, the overhaul of one of the White Pass dismals.
How long can a dismal go between major bebuilds compared to a steam locomotive?
