Following is a newspaper account of the same event. The D&RGW records and the newspaper accounts often provide details that the other does not include.
The Alamosa rotary was pressed into service Monday morning on the Santa Fe branch to clear the track of snow that had been drifted by high winds during the weekend. The rotary left Alamosa about 10:30am and departed from Antonito at 12:40pm with mixed train number 425 en route to Santa Fe following.
The snow fighting equipment will be operated almost to Serviletta, New Mexico and mixed train number 426 en route from Santa Fe to Alamosa will return on the cleared track.
According to Chief Dispatcher Graham, the winds began to decrease at Silverton at 10:320am and at 1:30pm the storm began to abate on top of Cumbres Pass. If the wind continues to die down and conditions are favorable, the railroad will operate the rotary over Cumbres Pass after it has returned from the Santa Fe branch and has been conditioned. If is expected, should everything be favorable, the rotary cannot leave Alamosa Tuesday morning before 3:30 o’clock.
