Bear in mind also that the drivers especially "wear in" to the rail that they typically run on. That is why on the NG, locos like the 2-8-0s had problems on the "main lines" in later years, because the drivers had grooves worn in them the size of the lighter rail, so that on the heavier rail, only the "unworn" portion of the wheel tread contacted the rail. I have actually seen grooves worn deeper than 1/4 inch in driver tires by light rail.
