3' gauge in Peru

February 07, 2001 08:17PM
A few weeks ago I was involved with some postings regarding 3' gauge equipment in Peru. Since then I have purchased an interesting book from England, "Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War" by R. Tourret.
He has a whole chapter on the US Army / Transporation Corps narrow gauge 2-8-2s built between 1942 and 1945 to meter gauge, 42" gauge and 36" gauge. More than 800 of these standard design locomotives were built by American, Baldwin, Davenport, Porter, and Vulcan. Within the chapter are sections about each user. Besides being used on the White Pass they were used in North Africa, India, southeastern Asia, Australia, Iraq, Philippine Islands, various other countries in Africa, and after the war in the the Americas.
Mr. Tourret lists three 36" gauge 2-8-2 used on the White Pass as going to Peru after the war. USA #198 went to the Chicma-Cajamer RR in Peru in 1948. USA #199 and #200 are listed as going to the Hacienda Casa Grande in Peru as their numbers 18 and 19.
United Fruit purchased in 1946 twenty of the 42" 2-8-2s that were never sent overseas. These went to their operations at Golfito, Costa Rica and Tela, Honduras. Several of these later went to government railways in these countries.
