Nice pictures, thanks for the memories.
As I recall from both the C&TS and WP&YR the winters with little snow cover produced the worst ice conditions.
A nice blanket of snow provides a layer of insulation, that keeps the water flowing underneath.
Earl Knoob, Gerald Blea and I once had a very scary experience with the 488 up near Dalton where the ice had formed over the inside rail of the curve because of a lack of snow cover.
