The Balboa 74 was the very first piece of NG equipment I ever got. My dad bought it for "me" for Christmas in 1968 (I think). He was going to get a C19, but with the bear trap stack and Walschert valve gear, he thought it was more interesting. It cost $49.95.
I ran the wheels off the thing. It and my orginal Westside C16 (278) were geared the same and the two (rather unprototypically I might add) doubleheaded all over my layout for years.
Eventually the wheels on the 74 and the 278 got so worn and the flanges so sharp they shorted out on switches. The frame on the 74 got so worn, if you picked it up the gears would become disengaged.
The last time I had the 74 out of the box I noticed it still had a huge Kadee #5 coupler on the tender. When I got it back in 1968, Kadee #714 HOn3 couplers were a dream of the future.
I guess I maintained my 74 is true RGS fashion (reminds me of a certain former management of a certain full scale narrow gauge RR).....
