Further to my previous post in request for info about the Nfld. NG, here is a very brief capsule history. The line was built by private interests in the late 19th century, and taken over by the Newfoundland government in the 1920's. When Newfoundlanders voted to become a province of Canada, one of the conditions was that Canada improve the railway system (which was the only way to cross the island at that time). Thus, when Newfoundland became Canada's 10th province in 1949, the railway was taken over by Canadian National Railways. Much money was invested by CN over the next decade, with new heavier steel being laid on the whole system (about 550 miles),and a lot of new rolling stock provided. Diesels replaced steam by 1957. The line was never profitable, and when a trans-provincial highway was completed, the end for the railway was in sight. That came in 1988.

Hope this answers some questions. If anyone out there is interested in the motive power/ rolling stock etc. just put up a post and I'll try to provide an answer.
