Union Pacific officials have agreed to run a passenger train between Denver and Pueblo during the Colorado State Fair this summer, Rep. John Salazar said today.
Last month, Salazar wrote to Union Pacific officials, inquiring about the possibility of rail service between the metro area and Pueblo during the annual fair.
In a response to the Democrat from Manassa, Robert Turner, the rail company's senior vice president for corporate communications said: "I am sure that there will be great interest and excitement for the return of our Steam Locomotive and the Heritage Passenger equipment to this route and we look forward to working with your office and the Colorado State Fair Authority to make this a truly memorable day."
The 2007 Colorado State Fair is scheduled to run Aug. 24 - Sept. 3.
The state fair train as envisioned would be similar to the annual Denver Post Frontier Days Train, which shuttles passengers between Union Station and Cheyenne on a single round-trip.
The most likely date for the trip between Denver and Pueblo. according to Turner's letter, would be Aug. 24.
This past summer, 450,000 people visited the fair during its 11-day run leading up to Labor Day, generating about $20 million for the state.
