A friend of mine did have a lense hood on his camrea and no filter, droped the camera while tring to scale a cut next to some UP RR track in eastern Oregon and ended up having to by a new lens because of a badly scratched lens caused by the end of a partly barried steel fence post. Now I know the distnce the camers fell a filter would not have helped but the lens hood did not help either.
And speaking of destroyed cameras a Navy friend on Guam had just bought a new Asai Pentax and while riding his motorcycle caught his new camera in the spokes and drive chain and ended up with a camera in two parts, The lens was broken off at the camera frame(the 50mm lens was still in good shape).
