Mountain Mail, Aug. 1, 1956:
The steel gang for the Denver and Rio Grande railroad started work on laying the rails for the standard gauge between Salida and Monarch, Thursday.
Information is that the changeover from narrow to standard gauge track will start at Monarch quarry and come this way.
About 80 men, most of them Indians, comprise the steel gang. They are billeted in dormitory cars on the Koppers Company spur west of Salida.
