For fellow Bay Areans:
On August 19th, the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad (18" gauge, Los Gatos, California) will be hosting night runs with 101-year-old steam locomotive #2. The evening will commence at 6:00PM with a gourmet pasta dinner ($10/adults, $5/children 10 and under) followed by night rides behind the "2-Spot" until 10:00PM. Tickets ($5.00) include one ride on the railroad and unlimited rides on the 1915 Bill Mason Carousel. All proceeds go directly to the railroad, a non-profit organization since 1968. Children under 2 ride free.
The 2-Spot was designed by SP (civil) engineer John Coit and built at the Johnson Machine Works in 1905 for the Venice Railway. In 1939, it was purchased from a San Francisco junk dealer by Southern Pacific engineer Billy Jones (a South Pacific Coast "veteran") and, from 1943-67, operated at his Los Gatos prune orchard for the enjoyment of local children. After Jones' death in 1968, a group of local businessmen formed a non-profit organization to purchase and relocate the railroad to Oak Meadow and Vasona parks, where it has operated ever since.
