C&S #9 the rest of the story (train) *PIC*

July 31, 2006 06:04PM
OK guys while all the "brass hats" are out on the Loop admiring the #9 restoration on Tuesday let’s do something about the rest of the train (or story as Paul Harvey would say.) Now for argument sake let’s just say that our rear end will be brought up with a certain caboose numbered 1006 that will be "relocated" from the other side of I-70 to Silver Plume. If any constables or local folk should want to know why this move is taking place the code word will be "Uncle Pete" and authorized by V. Miller as balance due on settlement circa 1938 with the C&S and as Victor would point out, possession is 9/10ths of the law.
So what is it going to take to fill in the middle revenue cars like the attached photo shows? Jason and Steve should now have a pretty good idea of what #9 is capable of pulling on the Loop (and no disseal helpers please in the equation). So what I am proposing is to build a train set of C & S replica gondolas that would meet the expanding passenger needs of the Loop and also give some C&S flavor to the equipment that could double for railfan freight use. Now Darrel and/ or Steve Peck can jump in here too but from a mechanical perspective the Bettendorf underframe cars would probably be the RailStar choice from a mechanical standpoint. From the frame up the cost to build replicas would be similar whether a St. Charles wood underframe car or steel would be used (archbar trucks will be the issue for the wood frames). Maybe a combination of the two car types would be more visually and prototypically correct. Now to help simulate the freight revenue loads the interior passenger bench seating would be covered with a reversible weather proof tarp that doubles as an off season cover and by reversing it with the aid of some strategically placed support rods /tie downs and some faux ore painting it becomes a carload of ore...
All it takes is someone on the inside to lead the charge; Steve Torrico? and convince the powers to be that history and the C&S should be the focus of the GL Loop...
