In the magazine Short & Narrow Rails issue No#13 on pages 29 & 30 is an article titled D&RGW/RGS Colors by James Genat. It states that in a conversation with John Maxwell that the colors for freight cars and structures were as follows. Paint was by Kolher-Mclister. D&RGW freight car red was KM-91 Box Car Red. The conversion for this using Floquil paints is as follows: 16 parts box car red, 1 part dark blue and 14 parts caboose red. Each one ounce bottle has 1,200 drops. The conversion is 16 parts or 1,200 drops (1 ounce) of Box Car Red, 1 part or 75 drops Dark Blue and 14 parts or 1,050 drops of Caboose Red. Add gloss to give appearance of car freshly painted. For a weather car its 16 parts Box Car Red or 1,200 drops, 1 part Dark Blue or 75 drops and 10 parts or 750 drops of Caboose Red. Depot colors are identified as Kolher-Mclister 6-C 14 Jersey Cream. The mix is as follows: 600 parts of Reefer White or 1,200 drops, 125 parts or 250 drops of Railbox Yellow, 4 parts or 8 drops of Signal Red and 1 part or 2 drops of Engine Black. D&RGW Building Trim colors are Kolher-Mclister 6-C-47 Brown. The color mix is as follows: 60 parts or 1,200 drops of Brown, 1 part Reefer White or 20 drops, 32 parts Railbox Yellow or 640 drops and 2 parts Signal Red or 40 drops. The depot colors are new, so weathered colors you lighten them a little. He also states that the D&RGW was relatively well maintained up until 1950-55. Also the colors that was specified was not always used. Durango and Chama depots were painyted white and green at one time. Differant paint manufacturer were used at differant times.
