Around 10:00 PM we arrived at the end of the branch line and our engineer whistled that brakes were set. While the crew tended to the fire, I hopped off the train in the dark with my lantern to walk back and protect our rear end as I could hear Shay #6 off east of us whistling for the grade crossing. I could hear her faint chuff as I first saw the reflection of a headlight coming around the curve towards our location. The sounds of the steam generator whine and the crew tending the fire were behind me and the smell of coal smoke and steam hung in the summer night air as Shay 6 got closer...
