Dark pictures in printing

All this discussion about dark pictures makes me want to ask a related question. Why do photos print fine on my old Epson Stylus 740 printer, but nearly always come out considerably darker on my newer Stylus C86 printer - exactly the same photo, on the same Mac with all the same settings? Yes, I know these 2 printer models use different ink formulations ("pigment-based" vs. "dyes") but I won't accept that as an excuse from Epson. I've tried all kinds of adjustments advised by Epson, but to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas?
