What is the best car siding woodl to use? *PIC*

Our NRHS Chap. Is making preliminary plans to restore our D&RGW baggage car #118. One major question we have is what is the best material to use for T&G car siding. Pine seems to be the easiest to obtain however most seems to have a lot of knots which would make it difficult to cut the T&Gs (which we intend to cut ourselves with a router bit). The original appears to be 3/4' fir, which is probably the way we will go unless we hear some better ideas.
What wood are most people using??? Are most people cutting the T&Gs, or are they buying the siding ready to install?
Thanks, Bill
