Herb:
I was just trying to suggest an alternative to repainting a D&S coach (twice) but I have to tell you your figures are a little off. Now I only suggested #284 if the parties (CRRM/D&S)were amenable to it. It appears unless someone has delivered a big crank recently to the CRRM that our tin feathered flock will only be represented at Railfest by Dolores’ RGS Goose #5. Based on the Railfest excursion coach price of $89 and a seating capacity of 44 in the #284 it would seem that the $4,000 roundtrip transportation cost (including $500K insurance, Henderson Heavy Haul, Grand Junction, CO) to bring the #284 to Durango (roll on/off step deck truck delivery) would not be that far fetched. Based on the folio dimensions the stove chimney vents might have to be temporarily removed to meet CDOT highway height restrictions in transit but otherwise it seems doable and further fosters cooperation and promotion of the narrow gauge brotherhood of museums and operating RR’s...
Now Herb if you want to be part of the "orange" Grande boosters we can suggest a special excursion fare package. This includes an orange sweat band to identify you as an orange booster and a roundtrip ticket to Hermosa on board D&S 3134. As an extra attraction for the orange boosters your car will be spotted at Hermosa using a flying grande switch move never before attempted in excursion service.... this will then allow for the rest of the historic train to continue on without post 1950's historic color distractions (train will pick you up on the return to Durango). But wait, there is more; as an added incentive 1 gallon of Sears Best Weatherbeater orange paint and ladders will be provided to each rider so that you might spruce up the Hermosa tank while you wait for the train to return. Please be advised that this is a special BYOB (Bring Your Own Brush) fare with standing room only on the 3134...
Take care
