The picture with the story had to have been taken well after the derailment. There's not enough snow on the ground for February.
There are some pictures of the incident, taken right after it happened in "Ticket to Toltec" page 53 (two photos) and in John Norwood's "Rio Grande Narrow Gauge" page 222.
In an interesting aside, John Norwood mentions, that "the word "wreck" was never used on the Narrow Gauge." "It was taboo and a firing offense."
