"Sanding Cars"

I have seen photos of cabooses that had been converted to "sand service" according the captions.
The caboose that most people would be familiar with was Westside Lumber #3 or #6, I do not recall which caboose it was.
There was a slot on the side where I guess sand was distributed from.
I have no idea how sand dispersed from the side of a narrow gauge car would land on the rails.
Or was this the purpose of such a piece of rolling stock?
How were these pieces of equipment used and what were they used for?
