490--what happened?

October 10, 2005 03:07PM
I had recently heard that the reason the 490 was sidelined and eventually scrapped was because it had a broken axel on the number 4 driver wheels--does anyone have any info on how this occured or was it wear and tear? Did any of the K-36's or any other 37's experience any similar problems. I had never knew what caused the 490 to be scrapped--just seen the depressing photos of it after was taken apart over the years. Thanks for any insight.
