"I don't think the whole line was electrified" You might be correct, but: I found the photo I identified in RR Magazine March 1945 with a photo of a 12 window coach being pulled by a 4 wheel motor the size of a Fairmont S-2. The photo was by the late Robert Davidson of Rock City Falls, NY. The caption read: "Air-Cooled 0-B-0, alis AMPHER, get a workout on the 42-inch gage Saratoga, Mt. McGregor & Lake George RR around 1885. Forty volts, passing through two-rail distribution system, put new life into horses at grade crossings."
I try to be correct in my posts and identify sources of the data. This does not answer your question but was just interesting what 40 volts did to the horses. Maybe it was just a local Saratoga transit experiment. I don't think that was enough voltage to give the unit the power to pull a coach and climb the steap grade to Mt. McGregor, as well.
Poor's 1889 identifies the line to be 10.50 mles of 3' gauge, 0.47 miles siding, 35#; Loco 2, Pass 7, baggage 1, freight platform 4. =12. Chart 2/27/1882, open 3/17/1883. Deficite was $494.36 for year ending Sept 1888. [gage is in error] In April 1888 it became the Mount McGregor RR Co. under new ownership, office at Canajoharie NY
"Bob Photos" (East coast dealer) sells a 8x10 of a 0-4-2T Porter on at least two coaches. Phone 203-734-6666 if he is still there. Or check him at the W. Springfield, Mass train show in February.
