Sanding without air

Sometime ago I asked how the sand was delivered from the sand dome to the rail when needed.
The many responses were interesting and appreciated.
I have another question now. How was sand applied before a ready supply of air, i.e. air brakes, was available? I know many logging lines simply had boxes that the brakeman or flagman would hand sand from.
I realize that in an ideal world, gravity alone would be sufficient, and was probably how it was done. But how were the sanders activivated?
How were they activated with air?
Thanks for helping me learn about this.
