You mentioned scanning slides. I bought a new scanner, highly rated, the Epson Perfection 1200 Photo (US
It scans negs and slides to 4" X 5" at 1200 dpi, along with normal flatbed stuff, and does a great job. 35mm slides print quite well up to 5 x 7, and they are more than adequate for web use. It is very fast, a 4 x 5 black and white neg at 1200 dpi takes less than 1 1/2 minutes, and this is a large file! It was pretty reasonably priced, about $270.
