yeah, the crack was about 8" long, and luckily it was on the outside of the block following a water passage. I got very lucky in being able to fix it, since a new 4.3 converted for marine use is quite expensive (much more than the boat is worth. The boat is a 1990 19' open bow Thompson)
I did the weld just a little bit at a time, and it came out remarkably well. It took nearly 3 hours however.
I am pretty good at welding other stuff, but this was my first venture into welding cast iron.
Also, thanks to the other person who posted info about the locomotive. I was just curious as to what it was, and where it came from. It is the first time I have gotten close enough to it to really see it.
