Working Narrow Gauge in SF Bay Area

October 11, 2000 03:45PM
Will wonders never cease...
In the San Jose (CA) Mercury News last Monday was an article on a plan by the State and Cargill Salt Company to sell a huge amount of Bay land to Calif for restoration back to marshes. (As a non-choo choo aside, I say FANTASTIC!)
What might interest everyone else was that all four or five photos showed the still operational Cargill Salt Trains. These are narrow gauge industrial trains similar to mine trains, complete with hopper cars. One photo showed a pretty long string, about 15-20 cars.
IIRC these are about 24" gauge, or something close. Pretty cool to still have NG in the neighborhood. I thought these trains were all gone.
