Kahului 12's pre-Silverwood History

I was interested a bit in the history of Kahului 12's days on the mainland previous to its sale to Gary Norton/Silverwood. I had some scattered facts and don't like to presume anything...
What I have found thus far: (as to how true this is, I don't know)
The locomotive was initially brought through I believe the Port of Oakland, give or take a few years, I had thought as the Hawaii Railway #5. Norman Clark I understand was involved in getting the locomotive preserved and I believe Jay Conde was a friend of his, who ultimately got the locomotive sold to Bob Keller and brought to Los Altos. I had thought both Jay Conde was John Greco (now of South SF's Bay City Boiler) were involved in the initial efforts with the Kahului 12. I had thought Stan Matthews did some work on it for Norton, in terms of installing the new boiler built in Colorado as well as running gear work. But I believe this was some 20 years *after* it first arrived on the mainland.
My questions; can anybody here recall the facts about the 12 during the several years in between its initial arrival and delivery to Silverwood? I'd be interested to know more about this chapter in the history of this locomotive.
