There is a locomotive plate for sale on eBay

I was told that there are a number of "reproduction" plates out there, originally made for placement to avoid the originals being stolen. This one looks too perfect to the original, and the seller conviently says he knows nothing about its past. Any comments? Are there reproductions for sale out there and where.
