The term "Extended" was commonly used to describe a smokebox that projected beyond the front of the saddle casting. Most longer smokeboxes do. The reasoning for lengthening smokeboxes was to provide additional space for ash to accumulate without blocking the lower tubes and also to accomodate the spark arrestor and superheater header. It had nothing to do with spark arresting per se. Keeping the lower tubes clear of ash greatly improved steaming but this advantage would not have been relavent on oil burning engines.
