Tie Plates

February 18, 2005 10:09AM
Folks,
The mention of a garden tie with its plate in place down below go me to wondering when the D&RG started using them.
I understand that when new the line was built with 35# rail and it kept getting bigger as time went by and the locomotives get heavier.
Does say 56# rail use tie plates? And just what does the steel plate do to benifit the track?
Thanks,
Ted Miles
