The Cumbres Depot was not torn down for the new highway. That is a common misconception. According to our Friend John Rupley: "This structure was removed by the railroad for tax purposes in 1954. Stations are taxed at higher rates than section houses. So, if you tear down the station and use the section house instead, you pay less property tax. Many old railroad elements "dissapear" because of similar logic." The modern paved "all weather" highway was built sometime after 1964.
I have had many people tell me that the depot sat right in what's now the middle of the highway. But comparing old maps (ROW too) and new maps and aereal photos, I thik it stood slightly south of the highway. It was at the center of the track curve right between the main line and the south siding.
