Snow Shed at Cumbres

I am currently building a model of the Snow Shed at Cumbres. On the West leg of the wye facing the downhill toward Chama the Snow Shed is bookended by what looks like storage shed on either side of the track.
The Snow Shed is 18 feet across normally. With these two "storage sheds" the total width is 34 feet.
Does anyone know what that extended portion of the snow shed was used for or why was it designed that way?
