Why is it that the Rio Grande had the K-28's built by Alco, but the K-36's Baldwin? How did the purchases take place and such; no other examples of either fleet aside from those purchased by the Grande were built prior were they? I'm just wondering because it seems rather random to pick a builder, unless there was some type of bidding situation among the manufacturers.
I picked those two engines because I work with them and most existing museums today only have one or two engines of the same class.
