On page 93 of the "Pictorial Supplement to Denver, South Park & Pacific" (Kindig, Haley & Poor - 1959), there is a photo which shows the last engine (of four) facing backwards. In the lower photo on page 95 it also looks like the last engine is facing backwards, and on page 102 both photos clearly show the last engine (of five) facing backwards. There are two reasons for doing this in case a backup move should prove necessary:
1) Usually the plow on the front of the rear-facing engine can clear any snow that has fallen or drifted onto the tracks since the rotary passed.
2) A locomotive moving forward is much less likely to be derailed by small drifts than a tender being pushed backward - especially a tender that is pretty nearly empty of both water and fuel.
