CUMBRES & TOLTEC PLANS SANTA RIDE: Santa Claus will be a special visitor on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad train Dec. 4.
A train will depart from Chama at 10 a.m. for a 90-minute outbound run, then pick up the North Pole visitor for the return journey. Cumbres railroad mascot Cinder the bear will accompany Santa on the return trip and hand out small gifts to children passengers.
Cocoa and cookies will be served on the train and volunteers from Chama will read stories based on "The Polar Express" story that inspired a movie. The trip costs $40 for adults and $20 for children. Call the Cumbres & Toltec at (888) 286-2737 for additional information.
The Cumbres & Toltec has rebounded from a low point in 2002 when the U.S. Forest Service forced it to close for the month of June because of fire danger.
The 1880s narrow-gauge railroad had 30,000 riders between Memorial Day and Oct. 17, when its season ended, said Chris Novak, its administration manager.
In 2003, the railroad had to refurbish its equipment and could provide only four trips per week with one locomotive. It had 13,000 passengers. During the 2004 season, the railroad had two locomotives and did 10 runs per week.
Next year, the railroad expects to add another locomotive, which will enable it to increase the number of passengers per trip from a maximum of 240 to 400. That could boost the total number of passengers to between 35,000 and 40,000 in 2005, Novak said.
At the Governor's Conference on Tourism last week, the Tourism Association of New Mexico named the Cumbres & Toltec one of the state's most popular attractions and gave it an award for best brochure.
