Help needed on the following Three Foot Gauge Iron Ore Railroads East of Catskill, NY
We have recently found some maps and engineer diagrams of the three iron ore railroads from the Hudson River to Iron Mountain now called Mt. Tom. We have walked and explored the remaining grades of these companies, which included two inclines as well.
The Oak Hill Iron Railway Company, era 1880 to 1883, possibly became following:
The Hudson River Ore & Iron Company Inc 12/15/1882 with James Burden involved shipped ore to Troy, NY from Burden Wharf until 1901. Railroad o/s 1902. Bought Dickerson #495 as #3 2-6-0 July 1884 and sold it Jan 1902 to Lackawanna Iron and immediately Standard Gauged. Any knowledge of other engines welcome. This company built the town of Burden and mined deep into the south end of Iron Mountain. These mines are now the Iron Mountain Security Storage Company and the origin site of this worldwide organization. The 8 roasting ovens 20 by 60’ high are still next to Amtrak Hudson line trains at Fox Creek’s junction with the Hudson River.
Hudson River Spathic Iron Ore Company Inc: 8/9/1882. Built a 3’ gauge railroad from Oak Hill dock to its concentrating ovens on the north end of Iron Mountain. It only worked surface pits. This railroad was believed to have abandoned about 1902 and only had two small saddle tank locomotives of unknown origin.
Any and all information on the locomotives, cars and other details would be most welcome. PHOENIX RAILROADIANA RESEARCH (PRR
