It was the fall of 1994 when Norfolk Southern decided to termintate the steam program. 1218 had not operated since 1991, but 611 was still out running trips after that. The farewell trip was in either October or November, and the last opearation of 611 was to Roanoke in December. Sad indeed since it wiped out steam from many states from the east coast as far west as Kansas City.
The recent closure of the Georgetown Railroad reminded me of the loss we had back in 1994. Today we have 3 less steam engines in operation in Colorado.
