end doors in box and stock cars

Can someone explain the purpose of the small sliding doors on both boxcars and stock cars? They are located on the end of the car about eight feet up. Also, about what year did the flying Rio Grande replace the "Royal Gorge" herald. I'd like to have this information for modeling purposes.
