On the Illinois Central we had both telegraph and telephone in use up until about 1968. I happened to be the last dispatcher at Champaign, Illinois to issue a train order via telegraph. A bad ice storm took out all lines, but only the telphone lines were rebuilt, ending telegraph on the Illinois Division. We had branch lines that were telegraph-only up until that time.
A telegraph line was still in use on the BN at Glendive, Montana until the early 1980's. I have heard that this was the last in the US. It was still there and in use in 1980 when I dispatched from the adjoining office.
