FEBT Rockhill Work Session Report - June 12 and 13 *LINK* *PIC*

July 07, 2004 02:49PM
The seventh Rockhill work session of 2004 took place Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13. We had 12 volunteers on Saturday and 10 on Sunday.
The FEBT participants were Bob Harris, Bill Miller, Wade Woodcock, Richard Culp, Lee Rainey, Charlie Wootton, Bob and Bud Goldby, John and Barbara Morgan, Jim and Jo Ann Bacon and Bill Adams.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Richard Culp and Barbara Morgan attacked the heavy undergrowth and trees along the south leg of the wye. The transformation was dramatic. By the end of the first morning, long-lost hopper cars had begun to appear. A weekend of hard work removed all the underbrush and many smaller trees. The next step will be to cut down a number of trees of 2"-3" diameter.
Jim Bacon and John Morgan completed repairs to the brick front wall of the boiler house. Two years ago this was actively shedding bricks and was in very bad condition. Now it is solid and ready for work on the roof support beams later in the summer.
On Caboose 28, Wade Woodcock completed the installation of the window trim that had been milled by Charlie Wootton. Bill Adams finished a variety of tasks on the platforms and then began cutting replacement curved fascia to fix rotted portions of the original. Barbara Morgan and Jo Ann Bacon painted trim and letterboard pieces. Lee Rainey continued the installation of end sheathing, bringing the job to within eight boards of completion. Charlie Wootton attacked some difficult roof work, and in the process made an unpleasant discovery: the cupola had some unexpected and serious decay and additional wood replacement will be needed.
THE NEXT SESSION
The next session will be Saturday and Sunday, July 10-11. With the caboose work winding down, we will broaden our efforts to a variety of tasks:
1. Completion of the caboose woodwork
2. Additional new tie installation in Track 3. (The railroad has decided they now would like to run steam power on it as well!)
3. Repairs to the canyon area of the shop roof
4. Additional brush removal
We look forward to seeing you then!
