July 5, 1925: a long day, for fireman Koopman

July 06, 2004 10:46PM
In the previous post the crew operating out of Baker on July 4th which was a Sat. is the same crew and only crew that will draw duty for Sunday July 5th. This pass. train will run all the way through to Prarrie and back for a round trip of 160 miles. Fireman Koopman has my greatest respect for firing this distance with wood both ways over 3 summits with 3-4% grades each direction. Based on the fuel consumption of the WHEccles Lbr. Co. Heisler #3, I assume this amounts to a cord of wood about every 15 miles.
The westbound train is designated train #1 and Ex. 1 east. I am confused about this, as train 1 would be pretty much on it's normal schedule as when an Austin based engine takes over train 1 as in the previous day.
They leave Baker 8:00Am with mail car 5, combine 10 and coach 26 which will be dropped at MP 60, leave S.Baker 8:08, McEwen 9:09, Sumpter 9:30, Larch 10:02, Whitney 10:58, Tipton 11:32, Austin 11:59, Batesville 12:30, Dixie 1:05, and arrive at Prarrie 1:40. They were delayed at MP 32 for 20 min due to "screen in engine clogged". MP 32 is about half way up to larch Summit from S wye in the Sumpter valley.
The return trip is designated Ex. 1 east and #2. They leave Prarrie at 1:50 with mail car #4, comb. 11 and will pick up coach 26 at MP 60, leave Dixie at 2:40, Batesville 3:05, Austin 3:12, Tipton 3:43PM, Whitney at 4:05 PM, Larch at 4:35, sumpter at 4:58, McEwen at 5:16, S.Baker at 6:08, and arrive at Baker depot 6:13 after about 10hrs and 13 min. out on the road.
The simplicity of operation July 4th and 5th 1925 are very much in contrast to the complexity of operations on July 17th when there are 6 crews and engines operating over the mainline. Perhaps I'll post a condensed version of that days operation at some point.
