Yup. There isn't many of them left out there. From the artistic and aesthetic standpoint I do not believe there were ever any prettier locomotives made. Those that were more industrial at least had those wonderful aromas of burning wood coming from them.
From a practical standpoint, there simply are not a lot of BTUs in wood, and as you know, that led to more efficient forms of fuel. But, today, those of us who have restored and operate this equipment do not necesarily go on the hunt for the hottest burning substances because we are not pulling the tonnage or the miles. That said, I think there is a recognition of the qualities of woodburners. At least I hope so. They are special machines, sometimes beautiful, but always quaint. Not only that, it order to make them go, all you need is to fill her up with wood and water. Try doing that with an SUV someday.
