496 was retired in 1954 and cut up in 1955. It was reported that she developed a crack in the boiler. But there has be some speculation over that. 1954 / 1955 the D&RGW was trying to get out of the Narrow Gauge Business, except for the Farmington Branch.
I would imagine that many parts of the 496 are still around. The 494 ended up with her tender. The Museum in Golden has her Headlight...
