The Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources (located in Fremont CA) will be hosting a work session this coming weekend to complete the restoration of our 1880 Carter South Pacific Coast Boxcar, no. 472.
The restored car features the large, (over 5’ in diameter) Southern Pacific herald that the car received when rebuilt in 1899.
The project includes new, correct 10 ton Carter swing motion freight trucks, based on a set found at a wreck site in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
On Saturday we will be assembling the trucks, painting and varnishing the carbody, installing the grab irons and switching to get ready for the next days work.
Sunday we will install the trucks and brake system, along with finishing any work left from the day before. If all goes well we will be operating the car late Sunday behind one of our draft horses.
Author Bruce MacGregor will be on hand on Sunday, and will autograph his books on request.
For information or directions please visit our web site at www.spcrr.org or call Randy Hees at the Patterson House office at 510 791 4196
