Is there any knowledge as to whether the Grant narrow gauge consolidations broke frames as often as the Baldwins did? Baldwin inside frame narrow gauge consolidations from that era were known to be somewhat prone to frame breaks; I've seen numerous examples of correspondence from customers (not only from the D&RG) discussing that tendency. I've wondered whether the Grant engines might've been stronger in that regard. On the other hand, the Grant engines, at least visually, appear to be more or less copies of the Baldwin pattern so they might've had the same structural limits. What evidence is out there, one way or the other?
Those closely-spaced domes scream Grant. The large group of Grant engines owned by the Texas & St. Louis mostly shared that style of dome spacing. I've seen builder's records for wheel arrangement and builder's numbers, but never for detail specification. Considering the chaos of Grant's final years, I expect not everything has survived.
