The theft happened after abandonment: 483 had builder’s plates in Nov/Dec 1968, but I have a photo taken in Mar 1970 of 483 safely stored inside the Alamosa roundhouse that clearly shows them gone. Hard to imagine how anyone other than D&RGW persons could have pulled them off. (484 and 487, without plates, had both been taken out of the roundhouse and separated from their tenders for some unknown reason.)
